The Magpies have enjoyed an unbeaten start to their league campaign, however, as defeat to Cambridge United showed in January, they cannot afford to underestimate lower league opposition this time around.

Tranmere currently sit 17th in League Two after a 2-1 defeat to Newport County at the weekend.

Howe has insisted that he will play a strong team against Tranmere and is aiming to have a successful run in the cups this season.

Speaking after the game with Manchester City, Howe said: “We’re desperate to do well in the cups – I’ve made that very clear,” said Howe. “But we have to be mindful that we’ve got a very packed schedule.”

Howe is expected to rotate his side that started the draw with City on Sunday and will be without Dan Burn who was withdrawn from proceedings at the weekend with a suspected concussion.

Ryan Fraser has a minor groin issue whilst Matt Targett once again missed out through injury.

Tranmere meanwhile may have a few familiar faces in their squad with former Sunderland man Josh Hawkes and ex-Hartlepool United and Gateshead defender Neill Byrne in their ranks.

Have Newcastle ever faced Tranmere?

United defeated Rovers in the League Cup back in 1998 with a solitary Paul Dalglish goal good enough to send Ruud Gullit’s side through.

Their last meeting came in 2000 where strikes from Gary Speed, Didier Domi and Duncan Ferguson secured an entertaining 3-2 win for Newcastle on their way to a spot in the FA Cup semi-final.

The most famous meeting between the sides came in the Zenith Data Systems Cup in 1991 which saw the sides share 12 goals before Rovers won a penalty shootout.

That game wasn’t broadcast live and saw some supporters not in attendance forced to watch updates via Teletext.
