'Pure and clear' - Matthias Jaissle makes Newcastle United transfer stance after latest arrival confirmed

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has reacted to Tomas Amaral’s arrival as the club’s new Head of First Team Recruitment.

Matthias Jaissle insists Newcastle United’s recruitment team has ‘clear alignment’ following the appointment of Tomas Amaral as the club’s new Head of First Team Recruitment.

The Portuguese replaces Steve Nickson, who left Newcastle last month after 15 years to become sporting director at Championship side Wrexham.

Amaral previously worked as Spartak Moscow’s sporting director and enjoyed a successful four-and-a-half-season spell as Benfica’s senior scout.

The 35-year-old’s arrival forms part of the sporting director Ross Wilson’s talent identification and recruitment strategy, which also recently saw Jack Ross promoted from Head of Football Strategy to Assistant Sporting Director.

And Amaral’s arrival quickly received Jaissle’s seal of approval.

“It's always good to improve things, and Ross is for sure the responsible guy and he's leading that department,” the Newcastle head coach said. “But it's always good to have experts, to have fresh energy in the team, and we're looking forward to working together alongside him.”

While Wilson and Amaral will play a key role in player recruitment, Jaissle will remain heavily involved moving forward.

“It's a pure and clear alignment between everyone involved, this is important, I think we showed that throughout that journey already now, it was a short journey but really clear to see that we're aligned with everything,” Jaissle explained. “We're a unit, as a coach you thrive for high expectations, also when it comes to signings, of course, but there are different aspects also to consider.

“One of the last press conferences we talked about, the financial fair play rules, for instance, so it's not a wish concert, but we're really aligned and we're always working together.”

Tomas Amaral reacts to Newcastle United appointment

Amaral, who helped unearth Enzo Fernandez and Darwin Nunez at Benfica, both of whom were sold on for significant profits, will be a key component in Wilson’s player trading and talent identification strategy.

“If you want to be a successful club in the Premier League, you have to trade players,” Wilson said. “And if you don't, chances are you won't be a successful club in the Premier League, particularly where the revenues of this club are in a phase where David and his team are making those revenues really, really grow.

“But without that, if you don't trade players, you're going to get stuck.”

Following the announcement of his appointment as Newcastle’s new Head of First Team recruitment, Amaral said: “It is with great pride and a strong sense of responsibility that I join Newcastle United, a historic club with passionate supporters who have high expectations and ambitions.

“From my very first conversations with Ross Wilson, I immediately understood the vision and the direction the club wants to take over the coming years.

“I strongly share the ideas and ambitions of the people at the club, and I am determined to play my part in contributing to Newcastle United’s success. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone and getting started at a club with such high standards.”
