Matthias Jaissle delivers brutally honest Newcastle United warning - this makes total sense

Newcastle United head coach has delivered an assessment of his side’s start to the season and the overall shape of his squad.

Matthias Jaissle has admitted it will ‘take time’ for his Newcastle United side to truly feel like his own.

The German arrived as Newcastle head coach three weeks before the start of the Premier League season and with the majority of Newcastle’s transfer plans drawn up. He inherited a new-look squad that wasn’t even his own.

While the additions of Amar Dedic and Nico Gonzalez have given Newcastle more tools to adapt to Jaissle’s style, the side are still very much a work in progress and the head coach is well aware.

For all the encouragement the second half at Crystal Palace provided, the 3-1 defeat at Everton on Thursday night provided a strong dose of reality at where Newcastle are really at as a side. Jaissle’s side are struggling for consistency and making mistakes, particularly away from home with 11 goals conceded in the three matches either side of the Palace win.

Matthias Jaissle urges patience

Newcastle may be out of the Carabao Cup at an unusually early stage by their recent standards, but they sit eighth in the Premier League table and two points off the potential Champions League places with eight games played.

And the Newcastle boss has urged patience heading into the final two matches before the November international break against Everton again on Monday night before a trip to Fulham next weekend.

“It will still take time,” Jaissle told the Gazette. “Sometimes we feel that it's still summer or pre-season when it comes to the training sessions to bring basics into the team.

“We had so many injuries at the peak, eight or nine. Then the weeks with the national teams where you cannot really work in detail with the whole team. So all these aspects leading to the fact that we're still in the progress.

“They're getting now more stable, but it will be still time to improve needed. As I mentioned, you cannot just think the injured players are back.

“Eight or nine of them, or now maybe seven of them, are back. They were out for a long, long time, so they couldn't train with us. They couldn't implement our ideas, so we need to be patient with them.

“There is progress to see now and from there we want to build on that.”

Matthias Jaissle on Everton

Discussing Newcastle’s targets for the season after the Carabao Cup exit on Thursday, Jaissle said: “We take [our targets] as a long-term journey, and our approach is to make progress, to see improvements.

“I think now it's time to learn fast from the mistakes we just made [at Everton]. Other phases were already obvious to see that we improved, and this is something we can count on, we can build on, this is the good part.

“But football is also in the end about results, so you need to avoid these simple mistakes.

“Now it's about taking that frustration into motivation for Monday, and having the approach.”
