£118m Newcastle United trio at risk of Premier League ban - on one condition

Newcastle United v Everton suspension news: Matthias Jaissle’s side have three players at risk of a potential Premier League suspension.

Newcastle United host Everton in the Premier League on Monday evening following Thursday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Magpies head into the game having been beaten by Everton last time out but looking to make it successive Premier League wins following the 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace last weekend.

Newcastle have three fitness doubts for the match with William Osula forced off on Thursday night with an ankle injury while Lewis Miley and Matias Fernandez-Pardo have missed the last two matches due to respective glute and illness issues.

While Newcastle have no immediate suspension fears heading into the game, there are a few players at risk of a potential Premier League ban further down the line.

Jacob Murphy, Yoane Wissa and Nico Gonzalez have all been booked three times in the Premier League so far this season. Gonzalez was booked for a foul in the first half of Newcastle’s win at Palace, in which he was named player of the match.

As a result, the trio will need to avoid picking up a further two bookings in Newcastle’s next 11 matches before the 19-game cut-off point or else they will face a one-match ban for accumulating five Premier League bookings.

Joelinton and Sven Botman have been booked twice in the Premier League while Lewis Hall, Fabian Schar, Anthony Elanga, Lukas Hornicek, Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley, William Osula and Jacob Ramsey all have one booking each.

What Premier League rules say about bookings

Premier League rules state that any player who accumulates five bookings inside the opening 19 Premier League matches must serve a one-match ban. Any player who receives 10 bookings inside 32 games receives a two-match ban, a punishment handed out to Newcastle midfielder Joelinton last season.

After the 10-booking, 32-game threshold is passed, any player shown 15 bookings over the course of the season is handed a three-match ban. To date, no player has ever been cautioned that many times during a single Premier League campaign.

Bookings picked up in cup competitions do not transfer into the Premier League matches, but red card suspensions apply to all domestic fixtures.
