Newcastle United 18y/o teases 'more to come' after first-team call-up & EFL Trophy progress
Newcastle United Under-21s progressed into the knockout rounds of the EFL Trophy with a win at Rotherham United on Tuesday night.
Newcastle United Under-21s defender Henry Johnson believes there is more to come from his side after they secured a place in the first knockout round of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.
Robbie Stockdale’s youngsters knew they would progress beyond the group stage of the competition for the first time since 2018 if they could avoid defeat against League Two strugglers Rotherham United - and that was exactly what they did after former Arsenal winger Kyran Thompson grabbed the only goal of the game.

The victory also means the young Magpies have now won their last five games in all competitions - and Johnson, who featured at first-team level for Matthias Jaissle’s side during pre-season, has insisted there is ‘plenty more to come in the season’ from his side.
He told the club website: “It’s brilliant. I think when you come into a 21s group, you want to be in a group that gets remembered. I think there’s plenty more to come in the season, I think we have multiple [goals] but this is definitely one of them. We knew the opportunity we had and we were in the driving seat to do that and that was all that was said before the game. ‘You’ve got the opportunity, make sure you go and take it’. I am proud of the boys, they were fantastic. In there, they are buzzing and they are super proud of themselves as well. It was a brilliant team performance.”
The United Under-21s return to Premier League 2 action with a trip to Reading on Friday night before they resume their Premier League Cup campaign with a visit to Peterborough United seven days later.
