The latest transfer talk from Newcastle United as the Magpies aim to boost their squad during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United and West Ham United could be handed an unexpected opportunity to land a long-term transfer target from Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Scotland international midfielder Scott McTominay has reportedly been on the radar of both clubs in recent seasons as they looked to improve their options in the middle of the park and there were some suggestions the Red Devils academy product was keen on a move to Tyneside last summer as doubts remained over his future at Old Trafford. However, the all-action midfielder remained with Erik ten Hag’s side and received praise from the former Ajax head coach throughout the season after scoring a number of crucial goals that kept his side in the hunt for a European place.

Speaking after the midfielder scored in a 2-1 win at Aston Villa in February, the Dutch boss said: “This season, last season as well (McTominay made an impact), so I think he’s an example for many other players nowadays. There are not many players who can come from the bench and bring this energy. He’s ready for every minute, always contributing to the team. Football is a team sport and we forget that often. But Scott is the example, always giving the spirit, in the week when he is training, doing the right things, working on himself, gives max. He’s ready for one minute, he’s ready for 90 minutes, he’s always ready. I think it’s great to have such a player.”

McTominay ended the season with ten goals and three assists in 43 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils and played the entire 90 minutes of their FA Cup Final win against Manchester City that helped Ten Hag’s men secure a European place at the expense of Newcastle. McTominay was viewed as an integral figure in Scotland’s plans for the Euro 2024 Finals and appeared in all three of the Tartan Army’ group stage fixtures as they exited the competition after taking just one point from group games against Germany, Hungary and Fabian Schar’s Switzerland.

However, it is his future at club level that has been the subject of speculation in recent days after the 13-time Premier League champions reportedly agreed personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte and are now negotiating over a deal with the Ligue 1 champions. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has suggested both McTominay and Brazil international Casemiro could be allowed to move on to enable Ten Hag to continue his summer recruitment with a deal for the Uruguay star.

He posted on X (formerly Twitter: “Manchester United have agreed on personal terms with Manuel Ugarte. Contract terms discussed, player keen on moving to United even without Champions League football. Club-to-club talks continue with PSG, as more clubs also inquired. Same agent as Leny Yoro: Jorge Mendes. Man United, working on outgoings with Casemiro or Scott McTominay to make room for new midfielder. Ugarte, keen on the move. Up to the clubs.”

The Red Devils have already enjoyed a hectic start to their summer recruitment after completing a £36m deal for Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee and a £56m move for Lille’s highly-rated centre-back Leny Yoro.
