Newcastle United star ruled out of five matches after training ground injury

Newcastle United were without Dan Burn against Liverpool, while Will Osula picked up a knock during the game.

Newcastle United captain Dan Burn is set to be sidelined until after the upcoming international break.

Burn sat out of the Magpies’ Premier League opening-day draw at home to Liverpool on Sunday after rolling his ankle in training earlier in the week.

The 34-year-old was spotted at St James’ Park on crutches and wearing a protective boot, but head coach Matthias Jaissle has played down fears of a long-term injury.

Dan Burn expected to miss another five matches

“If Dan is clear, he will be out for a couple of weeks,” Jaissle told reporters after the 2-2 draw. “How long exactly, that will be decided, but for sure our medical department is excellent, so he will be back on the grass as fast as possible.”

According to Sky Sports News, Burn is likely to be absent until after the September and October international break. Before then, United host West Bromwich Albion in the Carabao Cup second round and have Premier League matches against Tottenham Hotspur, AFC Bournemouth, Leeds United and Hull City.

Newcastle United assessing Will Osula

Meanwhile. Jaissle has confirmed Newcastle will need to further assess Will Osula after the Danish striker was withdrawn early in the second half.

“With Will, we need to see, the German continued. “Hopefully not that serious, and he can be back as soon as possible as well. For now it looks quite good, but we need to see and check him.”

Osula set up Anthony Elanga’s opening goal against Liverpool before his replacement, Joe Willock, put Newcastle back in front immediately after Cody Gakpo equalised. A last-minute Dominik Szoboszlai rescued a point for the Reds.
