The FA to hold crunch meeting that could see Eddie Howe leave Newcastle United

Eddie Howe is among the front-runners to become the next England manager as the pressure mounts on Thomas Tuchel.

The FA are reportedly set to hold a review on whether Thomas Tuchel should remain as England manager.

Most of the post-match fallout from England’s capitulation to Argentina has been centred on the German. Anthony Gordon gave the Three Lions the lead on 55 minutes before a notable tactical shift.

England dropped deep, inviting the world champions onto them for the final half an hour. Tuchel made several defensive substitutions as Argentina came from behind to stun the Three Lions 2-1 in stoppage time.

Thomas Tuchel post-match comments

Tuchel bullishly came out at full-time to insist he had “no regrets” at the gameplan. In later comments that have surfaced, the England boss took a swipe at the country’s “DNA” for failing to keep possession.

"In this moment, my feeling was that no structure in the world could have helped us,” Tuchel said. “Because actually we were too passive and we were not physical enough. We didn't stop runners arriving in our box and the deliveries were wrong too.

"I haven't seen the data yet, but I think just right after the goal, the momentum swings completely and ball possession drops dramatically. We couldn't find any duels anymore. That's why we dropped deeper and deeper. It was never the plan, but it happened.

"I think ball possession plays a crucial role. It's maybe not in our DNA like it is in our Spanish DNA or in our Argentinian or Brazilian DNA, to take the ball and control the game with the ball."

FA to conduct Thomas Tuchel review

According to The Times, the FA will conduct a review on Tuchel’s performance across the pond. Technical director John McDermott will lead the appraisal and all areas of the tournament are set to be assessed.

The FA’s chief executive, Mark Bullingham, posted on LinkedIn that Tuchel will lead England into Euro 2028 qualification. He penned a contract extension in February after initially only signing an 18-month deal.

Tuchel named a gutsy squad, leaving the likes of Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Lewis Hall and Harry Maguire at home. The performances at the World Cup were underwhelming - despite England reaching just their fourth semi-final.

The FA parted with Gareth Southgate and appointed an experienced foreign coach to get the country over the line. Ultimately, Tuchel fell short and failed to make the big call when it mattered.

Eddie Howe backed for England job

Newcastle United will be watching closely to The FA’s ultimate decision. Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola are the bookmakers’ favourites to become the next England manager.

A media frenzy ensued two years after when Southgate resigned following Euro 2024. The Toon boss - as the standout English coach - has always been open to the idea of coaching the Three Lions.

However, an approach never came and Howe committed his future to St James’ Park. Speaking on talkSPORT, the likes of Troy Deeney and Jamie O’Hara have called upon the FA to make a move for Howe after the World Cup disappointment.

“The remit when we got rid of Gareth Southgate was, ‘Let's get a winner’,” Deeney said. “And that was why Thomas Tuchel got the nod. We argued about it.

“Personally, I always think an English manager should be English. That's just the way it is. Why do the players have to fall into that category, but the manager doesn't? That's just the way I feel.

“I think it also shows a pathway to every young English coach as well. There's a goal to aspire to. But if it is going to be Eddie Howe, and that's the way you're going to work, then great. Make the decision now. Give him the time.”
