‘Sorry’ - One Newcastle United player fronts up to media after Leeds United horror show
Malick Thiaw wore the captain’s armband as Newcastle United were thrashed by Leeds United.
Malick Thiaw has apologised to the Newcastle United supporters after a disastrous defeat at Elland Road.
Both sides entered the contest undefeated in the Premier League. However, from start to finish, there was only one team likely to maintain their positive start to the campaign.
Leeds United put the Magpies to the sword 4-1 to inflict Matthias Jaissle his first defeat as manager. Leading by three goals at the break, Newcastle gave themselves a mountain to climb in the second half.

The hosts took their foot of the gas in the closing stages - allowing Bazoumana Toure to score a late consolation. Ultimately, that minor positive did little to lift the spirits after a humbling away defeat.
Thiaw - skipper in Dan Burn’s absence - front up to the media after the game. He sympathised with Newcastle fans while accepting that Leeds were simply the better team.
“A lot of emotions, a lot of things going through your mind,” Thiaw said. “Obviously, one is disappointment. You take it personal. (I am) really, really, really, really disappointed tonight. You can just say sorry to the fans.
“How we performed, the result… it’s not what Newcastle want to be. I wouldn't take this (the inexperience) as an excuse because I think that’s the team we have. It’s going to be this team this season so I don’t take this as an excuse.
“We still have quality. Overall, what’s more important than quality is attitude, the energy we have to bring. Leeds were just better than us today in these kind of terms.”
