‘Ask the manager’ - First Newcastle United player comments on Matthias Jaissle tactics

Matthias Jaissle came under fire at the full-time whistle for his Newcastle United tactics against Aston Villa.

Joelinton believes Newcastle United fans should not read too much into Matthias Jaissle’s formation.

The German is in the firing line after another dismal Premier League defeat. Despite promising a reaction from the 4-1 loss to Coventry City, Newcastle managed just one shot on target against Aston Villa.

It was another evening where the Magpies looked impotent in attack. In a desperate bid to snatch an equaliser, Jaissle turned to Dan Burn as a makeshift striker.

Villa held on for a well-deserved win to pull level with Newcastle on Premier League points. However, momentum is now against the Magpies ahead of a tricky trip to Crystal Palace next weekend.

Joelinton on Matthias Jaissle tactics

When asked about Jaissle’s tactics, Joelinton backed the manager as a “winner” - and urged fans to focus on the “principles” rather than the system. He said: “I don't think it's different (to) the way we played with Eddie (Howe).

“Today we played sometimes with Nico (Gonzalez) dropping in a back three. But when he was forward, we play a 4-3-3. It's just when we defend, we go to a 4-4-2. You have to ask the manager. He's talked a lot about his principles and the way he wants to play. That's most important, it's not just the formation.

“He's (Jaissle) like everyone, disappointed. He wants to win, he's a winner. We did better than last time. Last time (against Coventry) was not enough. We did a step forward in terms of the way we play. But yes, it's still room for improvement. We need to work hard to, be better and we will do that.”

Joelinton on Dan Burn as a striker

Joelinton was also asked about Jaissle using Burn as a centre-forward in the closing stages. In his post-match press conference, when asked by The Gazette, the Toon boss noted Burn’s height as the key reason for the desperate call.

“I was just hoping he'd score,” Joelinton replied. “As it's the end of the game, you go for the goal. Dan is a big guy who can win the long balls. That's what we were trying at that moment, to play long balls and see if we could get something.”
