Man who claims he tried to 'make shoppers smile' admits to resisting and assaulting officer at Boldon ASDA

A man who claims he was trying to make Boldon ASDA shoppers ‘smile’ at the door was fined £253 after he resisted and assaulted a police officer.

A South Tyneside man was fined £253 after he admitted to resisting and assaulting an officer while he claimed he was ‘greeting’ shoppers at Boldon ASDA to try and ‘make them smile’.

Michael Taylor, 48, pleaded guilty to the charges at South Tyneside Magistrates Court on Friday, October 16.

The court heard police officers were called to the supermarket on September 10 this year after security staff made them aware that a male, Taylor, was “causing issues” to members of the public entering the shop.

“He had been greeting people” as they entered the store, the court heard and tried “to make them smile”.

The court heard officers described Taylor, of Charles Street, Boldon, as “standoffish” when they spoke with him and he swore at them.

This led to Taylor being handcuffed and he later admitted that he resisted the arrest and assaulted the police officer.

Taylor was ordered to pay £253 in total, broken down as a £120 fine, £48 surcharge and £85 in costs.
