‘Pack it in!’ - Simon Jordan angers Newcastle United supporters with ‘big club’ claim

Simon Jordan has renewed his talkSPORT hostilities with Newcastle United supporters.

Simon Jordan has pointed towards the trophy cabinet while discrediting Newcastle United as a big club.

One of the most tedious debates in English football centres around whether the Magpies are a major force. Traditional “big six” clubs aside, Newcastle have the most social media followers in the Premier League.

Recent tangible success has been limited, with Eddie Howe ending a 70-year domestic trophy drought in March 2025. A proud one-club city, the Magpies have produced all-time memorable Premier League moments, enjoyed European football and, of course, wear a famous black-and-white kit.

‘Big club in Newcastle’ - Simon Jordan

However, former Crystal Palace owner Jordan has still taken umbrage with Newcastle being considered a big club. He told talkSPORT: “Newcastle is a big club in Newcastle - that’s it. I used to have this argument with Freddy Shepherd all the time. It is not a big club on the world stage. It’s a big club in Newcastle, it’s not an enormous club. Why is it enormous? Its achievements aren’t enormous.

“I know you (Jim White) want to celebrate religiously and relentlessly about winning the bleeding League Cup because, somehow and another, we all had to do that, even though they’re owned by a nation state, but no.”

Jordan also highlighted the volume of players that have left Newcastle recently as a major factor. Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have all pushed for moves in the last 18 months.

“They can’t get away fast enough!” Jordan added. “All the big players go up there, get a little footing in the Premier League, and off they go.

“They’re a decent-sized football club. They’re recognised in English football quite significantly but, on the global stage, they’re not a big football club. Nobody cares about them in Europe. Pack it in!”
