How Reform and Green surge could impact Newcastle United stadium decision
The deputy chair of the club’s Fan Advisory Board - who sits on the council’s planning committee - lost her seat yesterday.
Newcastle United will be watching closely to the fallout of the local election results as St James’ Park’s future hangs in the balance.
At present, the Magpies are yet to inform supporters whether they will revamp or rebuild their iconic home. The Gazette understands the preference has been to build a new, state-of-the-art venue on Leazes Park.
Despite that, Toon CEO David Hopkinson is keeping his options open. He told reporters in March: “We need more capacity to drive that revenue. We’re considering what to do with our stadium, whether that’s a significant renovation or a brand-new stadium."

Fans were told by Brad Miller, the club’s Chief Operating Officer, to expect a decision in “early 2025”. It is now mid-2026 and supporters remain in limbo - with no clue as to when an announcement will come.
The recent local election results could also throw a spanner in the works. Residents sent a clear message as the Labour were wiped out at the ballot box.
Newcastle City Council leader, Karen Kilgour, was dethroned as the incumbent party held just two of their 34 seats. The Greens and Reform surged - tying on 24 seats - as the Liberal Democrats won the most overall (25).
However, that was not enough for an overall majority, with the city essentially locked in a three-way stand-off. As for the Magpies, it is worth noting that Marion Williams, the deputy chair of the Fan Advisory Board, who also sat on the council’s planning committee, lost her independent seat to Reform.
A Green clean sweep in the Monument ward - which houses St James’ Park and Leazes Park within its constituency - could also deliver fresh logistical hurdles. With no party holding a majority, the club will be watching closely in the coming weeks to see which parties form a coalition.
