Newcastle United consider more ‘ID checks’ for supporters in 2026-27 ticketing statement

Newcastle United have published an in-depth report on the ticketing data from the 2025-26 campaign.

Newcastle United will “explore” further ID checks for supporters wishing to buy matchday tickets.

ID checks were introduced for away fixtures ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. Dud tickets are distributed at random, with a small percentage of fans seeing their entry denied on the turnstile and asked to visit a collection point at the stadium.

This has proven to be a controversial topic among supporters. Some view the procedure as necessary to ensure tickets are allocated fairly, while others consider the step as an overreach by the club.

Newcastle have published further information relating to tickets - revealing record demand. Almost 1.3million ballot entries were submitted for the 31 home fixtures across last season.

A split-sales strategy - combining a ballot with a members sale window - ensured that 96 per cent of members applying for five or more ballots received at least one ticket. Season ticket holders returning their seats to the club also created an average of 1,125 additional sales per matchday.

Newcastle addressed their three principles to ticketing: access and fairness, supporter consultation and evolution as well as systems and processes. The announcement also states that they are committed to “maintaining the integrity” of the system while advising against touts.

However, the news of potential further ID checks will divide fans. It remains to be seen what extra measures will be taken following consultation with the Fan Advisory Board.

The increased demand only highlights the need for a decision on St James’ Park’s future. CEO David Hopkinson told reporters earlier this month that a definitive answer on whether to revamp or rebuild the iconic ground is yet to be decided.
