Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is closing in on a return from injury after being ruled out for eight weeks.

Wilson has been out with a hamstring injury during Newcastle’s impressive run of form that has seen the side win 10 of the last 11 matches. He remains a doubt for Saturday’s Premier League match at home to Fulham but has returned to training ahead of the match.

Wilson has made four substitute appearances so far this season and has started just two competitive matches in the last 12 months due to injury.

Providing an update on Wilson’s fitness, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “Callum's still on track for, I think, right at the beginning of February, if my memory serves me right. He's making good progress.

“We're trying to do the right things with him and make sure that he is robust enough and has all the work behind him and the load behind him before he starts training with the group. But he seems very positive and what a massive player that would be to welcome back.”

Wilson’s injury issues at Newcastle have been well documented with the striker missing 42 out of 52 matches since the start of 2024. Under the guidance of performance director James Bunce and the club’s medical team, Newcastle are trying to get Wilson back fit and most importantly, stay fit.

“We have to, we're always trying different things, trying to learn from previous experiences,” Howe said. “And it would be the same for Callum.

“Callum's trying new things and no one should ever think that we're steamrolling into the same processes, the same thought patterns and expecting a different result. So our main aim is to keep Callum fit and keep him on the pitch and keep him available to play because we know if he does, he's a big player and he'll always score goals.

“So I know that's what Callum wants and he's trying his absolute maximum. He's doing everything he can professionally to keep himself on the pitch.

“And I'm sure everyone's united again in that support for him. You know, we all want the same outcome to see him back to his best.

“It would be great to see him back as and when that is.”

Wilson is out of contract at the end of the season but the club have an option to extend his deal for another year. The striker has scored 48 goals in 112 appearances since his £20million move from AFC Bournemouth in 2020.
