It was another heavy defeat for Matthias Jaissle’s side on the road, having previously lost 4-1 at Leeds United and Coventry City. Here’s our Newcastle player ratings from the cup exit on Merseyside:
Newcastle United player ratings v Everton
Lukas Hornicek - 6
Watched as those in front of him made some costly individual errors. Nothing he could do about any of the goals he conceded.
Amar Dedic - 2
A defensive disasterclass. Made a total mess of the first goal after failing to shield the ball out of play. For the second goal, he ran towards the ball to open up the space for Hayden Hackney to double the lead. And for the third goal, he gave the ball away in the build-up.
Fabian Schar - 5.5
Stung the palms of Jordan Pickford at 0-0. Hard to point too many fingers at him, despite the scoreline. Generally used the ball well.
Dan Burn - 4.5
Lost his duel in the middle of the park, leading to Everton’s second goal. Quite literally forgot how to defend as Thierno Barry added a third, but he did end up pulling one back.
Lewis Hall - 6
Newcastle’s best player at both ends. Won some important tackles at one end, and was a threat at the other.

Nico Gonzalez - 7
A consistent performer in an inconsistent team. He needs and deserves more from those in and around him.
Jacob Ramsey - 5
Too busy complaining to the referee when Hayden Hackney ghosted past him to double Everton’s lead. Put in a pretty combative showing before that.
Jacob Murphy - 4.5
Found space to whip in a few crosses, none of which fell to a teammate.
Harvey Barnes - 6
A threat in the first-half before coming off at half-time. Should have had a penalty after a clumsy challenge from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Joe Willock - 6
The effort was there, but for the most part, the quality wasn’t. That was until he provided an assist late on.
Will Osula - 5
Took a heavy whack to the ankle following a blocked shot by James Tarkowski. Struggled to get involved. Replaced at half-time.
Yoane Wissa (on for Osula, 45) - 3
Everything he touched turned to nothing. A shot that almost hit the corner flag from close range summed up his dreadful showing.
Joelinton (on for Ramsey, 45) - 5.5
Brought a lot of aggression to the midfield. Scored a late consolation.
Anthony Elanga (on for Barnes, 45) - 5
Got into some promising positions but lacked the quality. Blazed over a great chance to pull one back.
Bazoumana Toure (on for Murphy, 67) - 5
Struggled to get into the game after coming on.
Sean Steur (on for Gonzalez, 81) - N/A
Sarcastic cheers from the away when he was introduced. Newcastle fans feel he should be playing, and it’s hard to argue otherwise.
