Newcastle United player sends Lukas Hornicek strong message after Everton mistake

Lukas Hornicek was at fault for Thierno Barry’s winner against Newcastle United on Monday.

Newcastle United captain Dan Burn has publicly backed Lukas Hornicek following his howler against Everton.

Despite making four saves in the game, the Czech’s blunder on 49 minutes allowed the Toffees to open the scoring. Hornicek spilled Tyrique George’s tame effort into the path of Thierno Barry, who tapped home from close range.

A toothless Newcastle attack failed to snatch an equaliser - provoking boos around St James’ Park at the full-time whistle. Burn turned attention away from the under-fire goalkeeper by claiming the Magpies simply were not good enough to win the game.

‘Move on’ - Dan Burn

“Probably, yes, but I think that's football at this level,” Burn said when asked whether Barry fouled Fabian Schar before scoring. “You move on from it straight away. You can't just hold on to that. I haven't seen it again, so I might have been afraid that we might not have been, but I think we've had more than enough opportunity there to defend that.

“I know that has gone under Lukas, but we haven't helped him out by following that in as well. I saw Fabian was bleeding, but I think the referee said that they were both at it. Yes, fine margins, but we still probably haven't done enough to win the game.”

In defence of Hornicek - who also made an error against Coventry City last month - Burn added: “Lukas is top. He's a very, very good keeper. Nothing really fazes him, but he commands his box well.

“He made some big saves with that, probably go unnoticed sometimes, so I'm not worried about Lukas at all. As I said, their one went under him a little bit today, but that's on us just as much as it is on him to help him.”
