The club’s injured has has run into double figures since the turn of the year. However, Bruce – who lost Dwight Gayle and Paul Dummett at the weekend – will welcome back captain Jamaal Lascelles tomorrow night at St James’s Park.

Asked about the third-round replay, Bruce said: “I’ve said since I came through the door we’ll play as strong as we possibly can.

“We’ve done a roll call – Dummett and Gayle have scans. Allan (Saint-Maximin) is training again, but tomorrow’s a bit early. Instead of 12 or 13 out, we’ve eight or nine. Until the results of the scans, we don’t know the severity.”

Bruce’s players were in yesterday after Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers. United’s head coach said: “I can’t fault their effort and endeavour on Saturday.”
