The 31-year-old, who signed from Aston Villa in the summer of 2016, was set to become a free agent at the end of the season with Crystal Palace reportedly keen.

However, Clark is staying put at St James’s Park having become one of Magpies’ most consistent and reliable defenders.

"It's a brilliant feeling and I'm delighted that I've managed to get it signed,” Clark told the club website.

"My contract was ending in the summer; for me, I was trying to stay more focused on the games, getting back involved this season and trying to play games, and I've managed to do that over the last few weeks.

"To be back playing was the real aim for me, then the contract has followed, so I'm delighted to concentrate now on the next couple of years."

Here is how NUFC fans reacted to the news on social media:

@Jack_Rogers97: Been our best CB since his return to the squad very happy about this.

@thomas_millman: Not always been his biggest fan since he joined, but Clark has since proven to be a valuable member of the squad and deserves this new contract. Happy for him. #NUFC

@WayneGreen2: Well deserved. One of the very few players who has done well this season!

@BairdzyNUFC: Some good news for once.

@Bialzibob: Arguably our best defender. Been solid in every game considering the pressure we’ve been under.

@_ConorElliott: Fully deserved in my opinion. Now it's time to do the same with Fernandez!

@StevenNUFC: Pleased Clark has signed a new two-year deal at #NUFC he's been a great servant for the club he is always consistent with his performances.

@ScoutNUFC: I like Clark and he's pretty consistent, but this trend of giving contracts to Shelvey, Ritchie, Clark etc is worrying. They don't have age on their side. I'm very worried that these lot are signing up for their final pay cheque.

@jonniegrieve: You must be mad, @C__Clark but I’m glad you’ve signed. #nufc

@DammitMarty: Probably be the biggest signing of the window
