Steve Bruce gives Newcastle United takeover view in response to 'boring' claim

Steve Bruce has responded to Kieron Dyer's claim that Newcastle United are “boring” to watch.

Dyer was speaking before last weekend’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, which ended 1-1.

“They bore me – it’s like they’re grinding out results,” said the former United midfielder, who played Champions League football during his time on Tyneside. “Newcastle want to be entertainers, and now you look at this team – surely there are some goals in this team?

"Me, as an ex-Newcastle player, wants to see Newcastle being entertaining. Newcastle have been boring for the last five years as a fan.”

Bruce was asked about Dyer’s comments ahead of this afternoon’s Premier League home game against second-placed Everton.

"We’ll never be a boring club,” said Newcastle’s head coach, who succeeded Rafa Benitez at the club last year.

“I’ve only been here 15 months, so the three and a half years before me gives me a bit of solace, because they had one of the best managers in the world here!

"So I’ll live with his assessment, I don't agree that Newcastle will ever be boring. It’s not the DNA here.

"I respect what he says. We'd all love that – the goals, cup challenges, top seven or eight. At this particular moment, we’re not in that position. That’s what we strive for.

"Look at Everton last four or five years, what they have invested, what they have done in terms of managers, the turnover of managers, the people who haven't been able to cut it there. Then, all of a sudden, (Carlo) Ancelotti comes – two or three new players and that is what it takes.

"Unfortunately, we are not there at the moment. We are where we are. That is the reality. Most people accept that.”

Bruce said: "If it had happened with the consortium in the summer, it might have taken us to the next level. We are where we are, and my job it to inch by inch to keep us trying to improve.”
