The defender has been back in training for two months following knee surgery in April.

Lejeune has played for United’s Under-23s since recovering from his operation, though he has not yet featued in the Premier League.

Bruce, United’s head coach, is without Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark, and he believes Lejeune is ready to make a competitive first-team return.

Asked if he was tempted to field Lejeune, Bruce said: “Very tempted.”
