Longstaff is out of contract at St James’s Park this summer – and the midfielder is wanted by Udinese.

Newcastle tabled an improved offer to the 20-year-old this summer, but there hasn’t been a breakthrough, according to Bruce.

Asked for an update ahead of tomorrow’s home game against Liverpool, head coach Bruce said: “No different. I hope that he comes to me and says ‘Steve, I’m going to say here’. But it’s entirely up to Matty. Watch this space. Nothing has changed.”

Longstaff hasn’t started a Premier League game since January, and was an unused substitute for Monday night’s game against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium. Longstaff scored home and away against Manchester United in the Premier League after making a first-team breakthrough at Newcastle last summer.
