South Shields FC 'can't relax' after Morecambe win preserves perfect record

South Shields FC made it three wins from three games with a narrow victory at National League North rivals Morecambe.

Cedwyn Scott has warned South Shields FC they ‘can’t relax’ after they preserved their 100 percent record for the season with a win at National League North rivals Morecambe.

The Mariners have made a strong start to their first season under new head coach Mike Williamson after taking maximum points from a visit to Scarborough Athletic and Saturday’s home game with Chorley. A visit to face a Morecambe side that spent last season in the National League was always likely to provide another significant test - but it was a test Williamson and his players came through thanks to a late goal from former Carlisle United and Notts County forward Scott.

The game appeared to be heading towards a stalemate when Scott made the most of a short corner routine to fire home with just two minutes remaining and that was enough to ensure the Mariners head into Saturday’s home game with Merthyr Town looking for a fourth win in as many games.

Speaking after his side’s latest win, Scott believes the Mariners are benefitting from a challenging pre-season and insisted they can’t afford to rest on their laurels as they look to extend a fine start to the campaign.

He told the club website: “I am delighted. It was a tough game on Saturday and I think we made it difficult for ourselves. It went right to the end and it did again tonight. The more the clock ticked on, the more I thought it could have been a write-off at nil-nil - but we stuck at it and got our rewards. I thought we could have been a bit more risky with the ball but they were very disciplined and sat in well. You can see how fit the boys are, pre-season has been tough and every time we do a running session, the boys think they are doing six, seven or eight reps and they end up doing ten or eleven. You’re seeing that work out there that the gaffer has put in. We just can’t relax, we can enjoy the bus journey home, but we have another really tough game on Saturday.”
