Lighthouse exhibition shows the hidden world beneath our sea

It covers two thirds of our planet, but how much thought do you give to what lies beneath the surface of the sea?

At a time when nurdles are blighting our seas and shores, an immersive new exhibition up the coast from South Tyneside invites us to look at the world beneath the waves.

What Lies Beneath, at St Mary’s Lighthouse, Whitley Bay, is the work of North Sea Daughters, a collective of women artists working along the North East coast.

It will transform the lighthouse into a space of “reflection, storytelling and environmental awareness” through painting, installation and sculptures. The exhibition explores tensions between the beauty of marine ecosystems and the growing problem of pollution.

What Lies Beneath features the work of artists Jessica Leigh and Ajay Wood and asks visitors to consider how much of the damage inflicted on our oceans remains invisible until it reaches our shores.

Rather than offering easy answers, the exhibition invites reflection, conversation and hope through art.

The free exhibition can be viewed on Friday, September 4, 11.30am 5pm, Saturday, September 5, 12.30pm-5pm and Sunday, September 6, 1.30pm-4pm.
