The warning comes due to the fact that bonfires can quickly get out of control, putting people, property and emergency services at risk.

If anyone spots an illegal bonfire being built in South Tyneside, then it can be reported anonymously through South Tyneside Council’s Contact Centre by calling: 0191 427 7000, online at: http://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/reportit or to Northumbria Police via 101.

If there is a fire and an immediate danger, members of the public should move to a safe place and call 999.
