South Tyneside’s NHS Trust prepares for a busy Great North Run weekend

South Tyneside’s NHS Trust states that its healthcare teams will be ready to help those in need this Great North Run weekend.

With more than 60,000 people set to take part in this weekend’s Great North Run, South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust’s (STSFT) healthcare providers will be on hand to help those in need.

While most participants can look forward to enjoying a successful race day on Sunday, September 13, the borough’s NHS Trust is reminding runners and spectators where to go if they need health advice or support.

Anyone who becomes unwell or injured during or after the iconic half marathon can check the NHS 111 service as a first port of call.

For those who do need to be seen in person, STSFT has confirmed that extra staff will be on hand both during and after the Great North Run at South Tyneside District Hospital’s Emergency Department.

There will also be a team of volunteers who work for the Trust among those staffing the field hospital at the finishing line to help those who need urgent help.

‘We hope everyone looks out for each other’

Dr Shaz Wahid, STSFT’s Executive Medical Director, said: “We want everyone who is playing a part in the Great North Run to have a good day.

“Many of our staff are involved, whether that’s those looking after people who need care in our Emergency Department, or volunteers along the course and at the finishing line in the medical tent.

“We know lots more will be taking part or on the route cheering on those running.

“If you or someone you’re with becomes unwell or has an injury, NHS 111 Online is the quickest way to get advice and can send you on to the right place if needed. If it’s an emergency, then call 999 and there will be stewards and first aid points out along the course and at the end of the run on hand to help.

“We hope everyone looks out for each other and enjoys the event.”

The NHS Trust has confirmed that hospital services will continue to run as normal and visiting at the borough’s hospital is still open throughout race day.

The entrance on John Reid Road, in South Shields, will be closed off during the run but the Harton Lane entrance will be open.
