'They are amazing' - Hebburn charity champion looks to help volunteers who keep women safe on nights out

A South Tyneside charity champion is “stepping out of her comfort zone” to take on two gruelling runs.

A popular Hebburn charity champion is backing an organisation that keeps women safe on a night out by taking on two running events.

Angie Comerford, the founder of Hebburn Helps, is putting on her running shoes to help raise vital funds for Women’s Street Watch Newcastle.

The organisation sees volunteers based in Newcastle city centre from 10pm until 2am every single weekend to ensure that ladies who find themselves in vulnerable situations are safe and looked after.

In an effort to support the important work of Women’s Street Watch Newcastle, Angie has set her sights on running the Great North Run on Sunday, September 13, before then doubling the distance and taking on the York Marathon on Sunday, October 18.

‘These ladies are absolutely incredible’

Angie, who is no stranger to raising money for good causes, has stated that the running events are “way out of her comfort zone” but wants to help the “amazing” women who are helping to keep others safe on nights out.

She said: “In just under two weeks I’ll be taking part in the Great North Run but have also signed up for the York Marathon.

“Both are way out of my comfort zone but being a runner, I’m really looking forward to seeing how it goes.

“I’m going to be raising funds and awareness for Women’s Street Watch Newcastle.

“These ladies are absolutely incredible - I spent a shift with them at the weekend to get to find out what they do.

“They are out twice a week at the Bigg Market with their pink tent and help women who find themselves in vulnerable situations, as well as pretty much anyone who needs help - they are amazing.”

A busy summer

The long-distance runs follow a busy summer for Angie and the Hebburn Helps team, who have been supporting families throughout the six-week school holidays.

The charity has been providing free food and activities for those in need over the last six weeks.
