Manchester City points deduction punishment leaked as Premier League rivals watch on
A potential punishment for Manchester City has been leaked in the media after the club were found guilty of 114 out of 115 charges of breaching Premier League financial rules.
Manchester City are facing a significant punishment after being found guilty of 114 of 115 charges for breaching Premier League financial rules between 2009 and 2018.
It was a period in which City won three Premier League titles, three League Cups, the FA Cup and the Community Shield. While various punishments have been speculated in the media, a fresh report citing insider information has claimed Man City’s punishment will result in relegation from the Premier League.
Any punishment will be subject to the success of Manchester City’s appeal of the guilty charges. It has been reported that the Premier League are pushing for City’s punishment to be announced before the appeal process is concluded.

Manchester City facing relegation from the Premier League
The report from the Daily Mail, crediting inside sources, has claimed the most likely punishment for Man City is a significant points deduction that would guarantee relegation to the Championship along with a huge fine.
But the punishment wouldn’t stop there, with a further points deduction that would prevent City from being promoted from the Championship at the first attempt. That punishment would be subject to EFL approval.
Suggestions of even more serious punishments such as relegation straight to League Two or a complete expulsion have been played down.
But should the leaked suggestions come to fruition, Manchester City could well be taking up one of the Premier League’s relegation spaces this season despite getting their campaign off to a perfect start.
And that will come as a boost to teams at both ends of the table, with City currently sitting top of the league. Arsenal currently sit second and would be in pole position to retain the title should City face a significant points deduction.
Meanwhile, clubs at the bottom will be boosted by the prospect of one relegation place already potentially being taken up.
Newcastle United avoided Premier League points deduction
Man City’s potential points deduction will be the first points deduction in the top flight since Nottingham Forest were deducted four points for breaching Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules. Everton were also deducted six points for two breaches around the same time.
Newcastle United also faced the prospect of a 10-point deduction in 2024 but were able to facilitate the late sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh hours before the June 30 accounting deadline to avoid a PSR punishment.
Anderson has since been sold on to Manchester City for £116million. With that comes frustration that Newcastle’s attempt to desperately comply with the rules ended up serving a club that has since been found guilty of breaching them over a sustained period.
What the long-term future holds for Man City’s stars beyond the current season remains unclear.
