South Tyneside Council is anticipating that additional nurdles could wash up on the borough’s coastline this week.

South Tyneside Council has reassured members of the public that it’s “ready” for the potential of additional nurdles being washed up on the borough’s coastline.

With spring tides expected this week, plastic pellets, known as nurdles, could be washed up onto South Shields’ beaches.

South Tyneside Council has confirmed that recovery contractors and partner organisations will be carrying out extra monitoring and will be ready to respond quickly.

The recovery effort following July’s nurdle spill in the River Tyne remains ongoing, with teams surveying affected areas, targeting clean-up activity and working to protect the coastline.

Members of the public are reassured that if they spot recovery teams on the borough’s beaches in the coming days, they are there as part of the local authority’s planned response to the spring tides.
