Newcastle United are aiming to add to their squad during the January transfer window as they look to strengthen Eddie Howe’s squad and build on the unquestionable momentum built up over the last month.
As it stands, the Magpies are in the race for a Champions League place, hold a two-goal lead after the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal and get their FA Cup run underway with a home tie against League Two club Bromley on Sunday afternoon.
With their battle against the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations still ongoing, there is little room for error in the transfer market - and the current Magpies hierarchy will hope to avoid repeating some of the costly mistakes made by the club throughout the last 25 years.
With the midway point of the January transfer window rapidly approaching, we take a look at some Magpies signings that have failed to hit the heights during their time at St James Park.

5. Danny Rose
Possibly harsh putting a loan signing in this list but there were some hopes the England international could reinvigorate his career during a temporary stint at St James Park. 6. Carl Cort
Newcastle paid £7m to bring Cort to St James’s Park. Cort was one of the brightest talents in the country at the time and started his career at Newcastle well, scoring on his home debut against Derby County. However, injuries blighted his career and he left to join Wolves in January 2004 having played less than 30 games for the Toon. Photo: Stu Forster

7. Claudio Cacapa
The Brazilian came to Newcastle with huge pedigree having helped Lyon to multiple Ligue 1 titles. Cacapa’s two year stay on Tyneside coincided with their first relegation to the Championship and the Brazilian never looked at home in the Premier League. | Getty Images

8. Remy Cabella
Cabella came to Tyneside with huge promise that he could be the next flair French winger to grace the club and Premier League with his talents. However, his time in the north east was very disappointing as the club went through a tricky time on the pitch. | AFP via Getty Images
