United talisman Saint-Maximin limped off midway through the opening 45 against Brighton having twisted his ankle, but the injury, according to Bruce is not as bad as first feared.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup trip to Morecambe, Bruce said: "He had a scan, and has twisted his ankle.

"We don't think it is that bad. Not tomorrow night, a chance Sunday.”

Bruce’s side travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday to take on Jose Mourinho’s Spurs.

Summer signing Lewis is another who will have to sit out tomorrow night’s third round clash – but initial fears of eye damage have been allayed. Although, the player, at this stage, is struggling to see after a clash with the Seagulls’ Yves Bissouma.

"We were worried for his eye, but that is OK,” said Bruce.

"It is completely closed and has a cut but there is no lasting damage."

United kicked off the campaign with two wins out of two – beating West Ham United then Blackburn Rovers to progress in the Carabao Cup. But defeat to Brighton, in the manner in which it occurred, has seen criticism come the manager and his players’ way this week.

"We are totally disappointed with what happened at the weekend,” he said.

"It was a difficult, awful afternoon. You can put that right when there's another game. We have to get on with the job at hand and improve - and that won't be difficult.”
