‘Step up!’ - Alan Shearer orders one Newcastle United player to justify £15m decision
Jacob Murphy failed to deliver for Newcastle United in the 4-1 defeat to Leeds United.
Alan Shearer has called upon Jacob Murphy to “step up" in Anthony Elanga’s absence.
Newcastle United were dealt a huge blow ahead of the 4-1 defeat to Leeds United. Elanga - enjoying his best form since joining the Magpies - suffered a hamstring injury.
His blistering pace had been a weapon for Matthias Jaissle’s “vertical football” style. While Newcastle would likely not have won with Elanga, the attack looked notably limp.
Jaissle drafted in Murphy - the only natural alternative on the right flank. However, just like against Millwall six days earlier, the 31-year-old failed to impress.

‘Step up’ - Alan Shearer
Speaking to Betfair, Newcastle legend Shearer discussed the Elanga blow while demanding that Murphy fills the void. He said: “Anthony Elanga has been like a new signing because we didn't see anywhere near his potential last season at Newcastle after what we saw at Forest.
“He started really brightly after a promising World Cup, so it would be a blow, absolutely, because of what he offers Newcastle in terms of his pace. He scored a brilliant goal at Spurs and scored against Liverpool too, so it will be a big blow if it is long-term.
“Jacob Murphy has been there for a while and knows what it is, but he is a different player to Elanga. He's the one who will have to step up. There's a new manager and a different scenario. There was talk of him leaving this summer, but the manager wanted to keep him, so he will have to step up.”
Matthias Jaissle gives Anthony Elanga update
Jaissle gave a worrying update on Elanga while speaking to reporters. He said: "No real update on Anthony. I've spoken with him now, he is heading for an MRI scan.
“We will get more clarity after that, and hope it's not too serious. It is sad after the great start he had. He is a key strength in our squad and we want to stay positive."
