Newcastle United player ratings v Everton: 'Absolutely nothing' 4/10 & the 7/10 that 'has to start' at Fulham

Newcastle United 0-1 Everton: How we rated every Newcastle player out of 10.

Newcastle United suffered a second defeat in four days to Everton after losing 1-0 at St James’ Park.

The Magpies were looking for revenge after losing 3-1 away to the Toffees in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup last Thursday but came up short once again after Thierno Barry’s 49th-minute goal inflicted a fifth defeat in seven matches.

Matthias Jaissle’s side were booed off at half-time and full-time as concerns rise on Tyneside. They head to Fulham on Saturday sitting 14th in the Premier League table, four points above the relegation zone.

Here’s our Newcastle player ratings from the defeat:

Lukas Hornicek - 4

Mistakes have crept into his game since the international break and there was another big one last night. A howler as he spilled Tyrique George’s shot to Thierno Barry.

Amar Dedic - 5

Evidently, he likes to get forward but looks vulnerable defensively. To be fair, that sentence probably sums up Dedic as a player.

Fabian Schar - 6

Tried the long range passes in the first half but very few, if any actually, came off. Engaged in a battle with Thierno Barry and lost out to the striker for the goal after claiming a foul. Showed a bit of fight that others lacked.

Dan Burn - 6

A committed display, despite the defeat. Cut an extremely frustrated figure.

Lewis Hall - 5

Once the standout, now failing in line with everyone else. His performances are being dragged down by his teammates.

Nico Gonzalez - 5.5

Neat and tidy but part of a midfield that was regularly bypassed inside the opening 45 minutes. Replaced by Sean Steur on the hour mark and the Dutchman outshone him.

Joelinton - 7

Newcastle’s man of the match, if you had to pick one. Typically physical, but he was also positive on the ball.

Anthony Elanga - 4

Newcastle had been crying out for his return, now tonight makes you rethink that statement. Woefully switched off for Everton’s opener, though was unlucky to see a potentially equaliser backspin off the line.

Harvey Barnes - 5

Cut inside of Jake O’Brien on several occasions and was found in some promising positions but lacked the final ball.

Joe Willock - 4

Genuinely forgot he was playing at times. An absolute nothing performance.

Will Osula - 4

Anonymous for the most part. Surprised to see him last the 90 minutes.

Yoane Wissa (on for Willock, 64) - 5

Saw a late shot well saved by Jordan Pickford. The closest Newcastle came to equalising in the closing stages.

Sean Steur (on for Gonzalez, 64) - 7

His introduction was greeted by sarcastic cheers. A bright spark. Start him at Fulham. Simple.

Jacob Ramsey (on for Joelinton, 75) - 2

The same amount of red cards as goals in black and white. A stupid second yellow card deep in stoppage time.

Jacob Murphy (on for Elanga, 75) - 5

Whipped a few crosses in, as he usually does.

Bazomana Toure (on for Dedic, 87) - N/A
