Exclusive:The St James' Park change Newcastle United fans will love as £30m investment confirmed

Newcastle United have confirmed changes to St James’ Park as part of a £30million summer investment into the club’s infrastructure.

Newcastle United will be doing a complete rebuild of the St James’ Park pitch from scratch for the first time in over 20 years.

While the club relays the pitch with new turf every season, this summer’s project is far more extensive and involves lowering the current pitch by 3ft and introducing new state-of-the-art aeration and water extraction technology as well as a new under-pitch heating system.

This was confirmed by Newcastle chief operations officer, Brad Miller, in an official announcement made by the club.

‘Massive programme of investment’ at St James’ Park

Miller said: “We've got a massive programme of investment works happening. Things like the pitch where we do a complete rebuild. We're introducing sub-air and a brand new under-pitch heating system.

“We're also investing in our flood lighting. We're replacing all of our halogens with a brand new LED system.

“It gives us a lot more control and a lot more options. The other thing that the fans will see is that we're installing a brand new safe standing area up at level seven. We also want to make sure that we have robust and contingent operations.

“This investment package really speaks to that and allows us to achieve that. And in addition to all of those things, we're introducing some brand new screens within the bowl.

“This package of investment will elevate the experience for our players, staff and our supporters. The work we're carrying out this summer is about using the space we have intelligently.”

Newcastle United St James’ Park pitch

Newcastle’s St James’ Park pitch is famous among supporters and perhaps infamous amongst players for the notable slope from one end of the pitch to another by roughly a metre.

The Gazette understands that the complete rebuild of the pitch will reduce the slope but not remove it entirely, keeping a bit of St James’ Park tradition intact.

The expansion of the safe standing section into the Level 7 home end will also mean a reduced family section for the 2026/27 season. Newcastle will also be upgrading its corporate areas over the summer in time for the new campaign.

The investment into the stadium and training ground comes as the club prepares to make a decision on the long-term futures of both.
