The club’s injury-hit head coach came under renewed fire from some fans after successive goalless draws at St James's Park to Norwich City and Oxford.

Newcastle, without a striker following the first-half withdrawal of Joelinton, overcame fourth-round FA Cup opponents Oxford at the second attempt on Tuesday thanks to a 116th-minute goal from Allan Saint-Maximin.

“It was makeshift again,” said Bruce. “We’ve had to try to do something a bit different because of the problems we’ve got. Over the last few weeks, we’ve had criticism – and all the rest of it. If you’re the manager of Newcastle, you’re going to get criticised.

“We’ve had problems which have been quite remarkable. That’s our 15th game in eight weeks, and to be without 10 or 12 players ... it’s quite remarkable that we’ve been able to keep battling on.”
