Wilson will miss Newcastle United’s final three games after suffering a hamstring injury in last week’s 4-2 win over Leicester City, and Bruce is mulling over his team ahead of tomorrow night’s home game against Premier League champions Manchester City, with Dwight Gayle, Joelinton and Andy Carroll pushing for starts.

“I’ve got various ones knocking on the door, Andy being one of them,” said United’s head coach. “Dwight Gayle’s another one. Joelinton’s another one. So let’s hope I pick the right one. It’ll be a big, big ask against Man City.”

Carroll is out of contract at the end of the season.

Asked if the 32-year-old, re-signed in 2019, had a future at the club beyond the end of the season, Bruce said: “These are the conversations that we will have. As I said, all those conversations, those difficult conversations, will be had at the end of the season.”
