Newcastle United star a doubt to face Leeds United - international call-up in danger

Newcastle United striker Will Osula hasn’t featured since the Premier League opener against Liverpool due to a foot injury.

Denmark boss Brian Riemer has cast doubt on calling up Newcastle United striker Will Osula for the upcoming international break.

Osula was forced off with a foot injury during the Magpies’ Premier League opening day draw at home to Liverpool and hasn’t featured since.

The 23-year-old has missed each of the last four matches, and if his absence continues against Leeds United on Monday night, Riemer has revealed he will not be considered for Denmark’s upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Norway, Wales and Portugal.

Denmark boss casts doubt over Will Osula call-up

“I am in constant dialogue with Will,” Riemer told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet (via Sport Witness). “He has a tricky football injury that can flare up and subside.

“Will needs to get out there and play if he is to be considered for the national team. Clearly, time is running out. My completely honest explanation is that I don’t know any more than that.

“I’m naming the squad on Tuesday, and it’s starting to become problematic for him if the next match is also out of the picture.”

“I’ve learned from past experience,” added Riemer. “On Monday evening, I’ll dot the i’s and cross the t’s. A lot can happen in the world of football. It’s not about what I think; I’ve already made up my mind about the squad I want to take.”

“But who will be fit, and will anyone get injured?” In the two years I’ve been here, something has always happened during that final weekend. Let’s hope those who were doubtful make it back; we’ll know by Monday evening.

“Once the final match has been played on Monday evening, we’ll make the final decision.”

Matthias Jaissle staying tight-lipped on NUFC injuries

Externally, there is still no clarity on when Osula will return to action, with Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle preferring to keep the injury news confidential.

Jaissle was asked to provide updates on Osula, Dan Burn and Joelinton ahead of the Leeds game and said: “Yeah, step-by-step with all of the players.

“I mentioned it many times already, so I don't want to go into details, as this is something usually confidential and our medical department is working the in-day-out to bring them back as soon as possible.”
