Mike Williamson’s side preserved their unbeaten record for the season with a narrow win at Hednesford Town on Tuesday night and they could move to the top of the table with a victory on Tuesday night if results elsewhere fall in their favour. Far from resting on his laurels, Williamson has already boosted his squad with the signing of former Sunderland and Rangers winger Jordan Jones - and he will be joined by another new face after the Mariners agreed a deal to sign forward Clegg from step two rivals Radcliffe.

The 24-year-old joined The Boro from Trafford last summer and scored 26 goals in 44 appearances during what will now become his first and only full season at the Neuven Stadium. Clegg is already off the mark for the current campaign after scoring in Radcliffe’s 2-1 home win against Morecambe last month - and he will now look to make an immediate impact after being the latest addition to Williamson’s attacking options.

Clegg will be available for Tuesday’s home game with Marine - and he admitted he couldn’t wait to get started as he looks to help the Mariners build on a solid start to the new season.

He told the club website: “I’m buzzing to be here and to be signing for South Shields, it’s my first time stepping into a full-time environment, and I think this is the perfect Club for me to continue my career. I love the football that’s being played here, it suits me really well, and I can’t wait to get started. I’d like to say thank you to everyone at Radcliffe, the staff, players, and everyone involved who have helped me during my time at the Club, and I wish you all the best for the rest of the season”

Meanwhile, the Mariners have discovered their opponents for the FA Cup second qualifying round after they were handed a home tie against Northern Premier League West Division side Witton Albion. That tie will take place on Saturday, September 19.
